Assessment Provisions

The Lancasterian School is an assessment provider. We carry out formal developmental assessment of our pupils over a set period of time, making detailed observations across all curriculum areas. This, combined with formative testing, allows us to build up a full picture of each pupil’s ability, strengths and weaknesses. Our information is then compiled into a summative report to provide individual advice on each pupil’s educational needs.

Ongoing assessment is an integral part of the National Curriculum, and all of our staff contribute to this review process. This allows us to gain a clear insight into the individual abilities of each pupil, letting us match the next steps in learning and teaching to the child’s individual needs.

Annual Reviews

All pupils have an annual review. This review allows our professional staff, the individual pupils and parents/carers the opportunity to review and discuss their progress towards the pupil’s individual goals.

This annual review is an important part of the ongoing assessment cycle compiled for each pupil.

All pupils in Key Stage 3 and 4 attend their annual review. Pupils in the primary department contribute comments or pictures to support their review. Pupils in year 5 and 6 or pupils moving to a new school are invited to attend part of their annual review meeting.

End of Key Stage assessments - National Requirements

  • Foundation Stage

At the end of the Foundation Stage all pupils complete the Foundation Stage profile, which incorporates teacher assessment.

  • Key Stage 1

At the end of the Key Stage 1 all pupils complete the Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs), which are based on teacher assessment.

  • Key Stage 2

At the end of Key Stage 2 the pupils will be entered for the SATs. This incorporates teacher assessment and tests.

  • Key Stage 3

At the end of Key Stage 3 some pupils will be entered for the SATs tests. All pupils will have a teacher assessment.

  • Key Stage 4

All pupils take part in national accredited courses matched to their individual ability level.

Assessment week

In addition to statutory testing, the school has an assessment week in June, during which all pupils complete NFER standardised tests in literacy and numeracy.

Throughout the year we make every effort to involve pupils in recording and celebrating their own progress. Examples of pupils' work are retained in a portfolio up until the end of Key Stage 2. From Key Stage 3 onwards, pupils build up their own “Record of Achievement” which helps them assessing their own learning and forms a summary of their achievements and progress when they leave school.
